Dry January | Utah Adventure Journal

This was for an article about a skier whose wife pressures him into observing Dry January with her. If you are like me and have never heard of it before, Dry January was originated in England to challenge people to stop drinking for a month as a way to raise awareness about the health benefits of not drinking too much.

    Illustration Friday | Internet

My entry for this week’s Illustration Friday challenge is from a cover illustration I did for the Graphic Artists Guild newsletter. The title of the piece is Intertubes, and comes from Senator Ted Stevens’ infamous comment that the internet is a “series of tubes.”

Got inspired to go for a retro video game theme for this one. The article is about an avid skier who “powers up” by eating Granny B’s Original Pink Cookies, and I couldn’t help but be reminded of Super Mario. This is my first attempt at creating pixel art, and I was surprised at how easy and fun it turned out to be.

Illustration for an article about the loss of the writer’s beloved outdoor companion. While I was looking up photo references for one of the hiking trails mentioned in the article (which I obviously ended up not using!), I happened across a photo of the author and his dog. My initial idea was to draw more of an “everydog” type of dog, but after seeing the photos of Jared and his fallen buddy, I thought it would be nice to recreate her likeness.

    Kid Hercules

Kid Hercules was a personal project I started years ago that I’m finally getting back around to. Since then, I’ve made several refinements to how I draw the main characters, in addition to expanding the story to an epic, multi-part series. Pop over to KidHercules.com for a peek at the original first three pages, and stay tuned for further updates! www.kidhercules.com

This illustration of an alphabet garden was a proposal I did for a Blue Manatee Press book called The Reading Room. While they ended up not using it, a friend of mine liked it so much, she bought a print for her 1-year-old daughter. She was also nice enough to send me some photos, and I was happy to see that her daughter seems to be enjoying the print very much!
