Illustration for an article about the loss of the writer’s beloved outdoor companion. While I was looking up photo references for one of the hiking trails mentioned in the article (which I obviously ended up not using!), I happened across a photo of the author and his dog. My initial idea was to draw more of an “everydog” type of dog, but after seeing the photos of Jared and his fallen buddy, I thought it would be nice to recreate her likeness.

Did this spot illustration for Ascent Backcountry Snow Journal just before going on vacation, and realized I forgot to post it. This was for an article on a ski-lover’s knack for going out of town to do some other outdoor activity (biking, kayaking, etc.) and missing out on fresh snowfall on his hometown mountains where he loves to ski.

Climate Action Puzzle | TEDx talk by Dr Cara Augustenborg

I recently had the honor of contributing an illustration to a TEDx talk given in Ireland by client and friend, Dr Cara Augustenborg. Her talk was on the need to shift our focus from dwelling on climate change as a problem to focusing instead on the positive climate action already being taken, and replicating that where we live. I had the task of coming up with a climate puzzle, with each piece representing one of six main areas where we need to take positive climate action. Each piece was then used in Dr Augustenborg’s slide show as an icon for each of these topics.

  • Custom Skis

    Custom Skis

I recently did an illustration for an article that appeared in Utah Adventure Journal about an outdoor guy, Brian McKenna, with a larger-than-life personality who ended up becoming paralyzed in a bike accident. (You can read the article here.) I found myself moved by the friendship expressed in the article, and resolved to make my illustration live up to such a personality. After the article ran, one of Brian’s friends who was with him in the South American scene I illustrated, asked if he could pay me to use the art to have a custom pair of skis made in Brian’s honor. I was extremely flattered by the request. Not only that, but he was kind enough to share photos of the process of getting his custom skis made by the good folks over at Wagner Custom Skis.
