    Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine

My first map illustration for Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine was published this month for their regular feature, Happy Trails. (This one features attractions near Boone, NC.) I’ve really been enjoying this gig and getting to learn about some beautiful places to visit nearby. So if you happen to live in the Blue Ridge area, pick up your free issue today and check it out!

  • Michael Dales: Chakra Surfer

    Michael Dales: Chakra Surfer

Illustration done for a friend of mine who is an avid surfer and meditator. Gave me a nice excuse to look up the work of Jack Kirby so I could get that classic cosmic look.

  • Mash-up: Bat-Hobbes and Calvin

    Mash-up: Bat-Hobbes and Calvin

    mash-up bat-hobbes and calvin

Did this Bat-Hobbes and Calvin mash-up originally for my Graphic Novels class in watercolor. I wasn’t happy with the results, so I went ahead and redid it digitally. I like this version much better, though I’m pretty sure in real life Calvin would make sure he got to be Batman.

  • My last homework assignment

    My last homework assignment

I was up pretty late the other night trying to get this done in time for my final, and as I was working on the sign I realized, “This is it, my last homework assignment before I graduate. The end really is near!” Actually, it still could use a little work, but its already been turned in and graded.

The illustration was inspired by an article on how global warming is causing hops and barley crops to suffer, which could lead to beer shortages in the future.

This is my other last bit of homework, done for an article about potentially developing and growing algae (pond scum) that can be used as an efficient source of bio-fuel. Again, it could use a little more tweeking, like making the pond a more distinct green from everything else, but overall I really liked the concept of using inanimate objects to sell the gag rather than relying on people. My thanks to my professor for nudging me in that direction!

  • Kid Hercules: Cover draft

    Kid Hercules: Cover draft

Here’s a quick color version for the Kid Hercules graphic novel. My professor was really happy with the comic as a whole (we were only required to do a part of it) and has encouraged me to finish it and get it published. So hopefully I’ll have some time over the holidays to get some more of it done and to see about shopping it around!

    Kid Hercules: The Graphic Novel

Here’s a preview of my upcoming graphic novel entitled: Kid Hercules and the Gigantic Angry Monster Sausage. I’ll have more to post about it soon…

  • Holiday Calendar

    Holiday Calendar

The assignment was to do something for a “Holiday Calendar” for the Richmond Times. Difficulty: no religious symbols, no Santa, no elves. Here’s the final along with the original thumbnail sketch below:

  • The Mezmerizer VS. Octogirl and Overcompensation Man (Pencils)

The Mezmerizer VS. Octogirl and Overcompensation Man (Pencils)

Some more random silliness from my Graphic Novels class. We each had to come up with either a villain or a hero, then we paired up into groups to have our characters duke it out.

I came up with the Mezmerizer. (Pictured above.) He’s a villain. He wins in the end ’cause he’s got style…

  • Robot Attack: Inked

    Robot Attack: Inked

As promised, here is the inked version of my robot attack sequence. You can see the pencil version here. I think I may have to add an extra panel between the 4th and 5th frames to show the tower-bot in the middle of transforming. The way it is now, one panel there’s a tower, the next there’s a new robot.

    Astronaut

Here’s a quick scenario involving an astronaut who has landed on the wrong planet.
