    Latest Map Illustrations

Here are the latest map illustrations for Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine. This month’s issue features Black Mountain, North Carolina, while last month’s issue featured Chattanooga, Tennessee.

I also want to post a big thanks to the team at Blue Ridge for taking me on for another year of map illustration! Woo-hoo!!!

This Month’s Map Illustration: Red River Gorge

There were a lot of fun features to draw for this month’s map illustration, which happens to be an area just south of where I grew up.

    Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine

Been fairly busy lately updating my website and doing a two-week beach vacation with the family, so I’ve gotten a little behind with my blog. Here are the latest map illustrations for Blue Ridge Outdoors. The first one, appropriately enough, is focused on the coastal town of Charleston, South Carolina. I got to draw some alligators for this one, so that was pretty fun.

Mountains to Sea Trail map illustration I did for Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine. Highlights features such as Clingman’s Dome, (the highest mountain in the Great Smokies Mountain National Park), Linville Gorge, Stone Mountain Loop, the Buffalo Creek Greenway, Cape Hatteras Light House, and even highlights a section traveled by President Obama and the First Lady. According to my Art Director, this may be the most detailed map of the MST to date. That wouldn’t surprise me at all considering how difficult the research for this assignment was!

I also did my usual Happy Trails cartoon map, this time for Franklin County, Va.

    Harrisonburg Illustrated

My latest cartoon map illustration in this month’s issue of Blue Ridge Outdoors features Harrisonburg, Va.

I actually attended JMU out in Harrisonburg for one whole week while I was desperately awaiting confirmation of my acceptance to VCU’s School of the Arts (my first school of choice). The crazy part was that I had applied to JMU quite late, so when I arrived I had to run around and beg professors to let me into their already booked-classes so I wouldn’t get stuck taking things like Bolshevik Romance Poetry of the Industrial Revolution 101 or An Introduction to Rudimentary Basket-Weaving Techniques of Pre-Colonial Java. All of them were kind enough to squeeze me in, only to have me turn around and drop out once I got admitted to VCU. (Man! I am such a JERK!)

Stay tuned…more work is on the way!

Maptastic! Double the Maps, Double the Outdoorsy Info!

As you can see, I did not one, but two map illustrations for this month’s Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine! In addition to my usual cartoon map, I also did an info map for their cover story on the Appalachian Trail. I’m really happy with how each of them came out, but I’m especially proud of the cartoon map. There were a lot of interesting and fun new features for me to work with this time, like ponies, rhododendrons, and for the first time so far, I got to include a couple of state borders. (I’m easily amused…)

Here’s my latest map illustration for Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine, featuring Brevard, North Carolina. I’m really happy with how this one came out. I also got to do some waterfalls this time, which was pretty cool.
