Stay In Bed Or Go Mountain Biking? | Utah Adventure Journal

Scott DuBar | Stay Or Go | UAJ

This month’s Utah Adventure Journal article, Stay In Bed Or Go Mountain Biking, is about the age-old dilemma of wanting to stay in bed versus getting up and doing something productive, in this case, mountain biking with friends. I thought it would be fun to give my illustration a kind of Alice In Wonderland tumbling down the rabbit hole kind of feel. People often fantasize about having a bed that topples them out in the morning so they would be forced to wake up on time, but what if your bed could topple you out right where you needed to be, with all of your things that you needed?

Here’s the digital sketch I did for this illustration. Since I had a lot of items floating around, it was helpful to do my sketch digitally. That way, I could easily move things around and work out a nice flow for everything.

This is the inked version of my illustration. I do all my inking on paper, as I feel I have more control than with my Wacom tablet. Here you can see where I made changes to some of the things floating around, like the shoes and the mountain bike.

Got inspired to go for a retro video game theme for this one. The article is about an avid skier who “powers up” by eating Granny B’s Original Pink Cookies, and I couldn’t help but be reminded of Super Mario. This is my first attempt at creating pixel art, and I was surprised at how easy and fun it turned out to be.

A Good Outdoors Dog | Client: Utah Adventure Journal

Illustration for an article about the loss of the writer’s beloved outdoor companion. While I was looking up photo references for one of the hiking trails mentioned in the article (which I obviously ended up not using!), I happened across a photo of the author and his dog. My initial idea was to draw more of an “everydog” type of dog, but after seeing the photos of Jared and his fallen buddy, I thought it would be nice to recreate her likeness.

Did this spot illustration for Ascent Backcountry Snow Journal just before going on vacation, and realized I forgot to post it. This was for an article on a ski-lover’s knack for going out of town to do some other outdoor activity (biking, kayaking, etc.) and missing out on fresh snowfall on his hometown mountains where he loves to ski.
